Budget Forms

Budget forms can be a very valuable tool for creating and maintaining your budget.  But, you have to remember that the best tools on earth are worthless, if you don’t know what job you’re trying to do.  Try to use the best tools that you can, but remember, what you are actually doing is trying to build a financially responsible way of life.  I am telling you and you must realize that there are certain specific steps to take when building and living that financial plan.

The first step in building the financial plan is to define your goals in life.  You must lay out what you want to achieve with your financial life.  Once you know what your goals are, then you can begin to build that financial plan for your life.  Be specific about what you want to achieve.  Would you like not to live from paycheck to paycheck?  Wouldn’t it be nice to be debt free?  How would you like to be able to pay for a vacation prior to taking it?  These are all examples of goals that you can establish.

Once the goals are established, you must develop a plan.  That plan is the means by which you will allocate your assets to meet the plan and achieve your goals.  Choose your main goal and build your plan around that.  Once that goal is achieved, then you can pick another goal and have your plan go for it.  Work on your goals one at a time while keeping all of them in mind.  That will allow you to break your actions down into workable categories.

Once the plan is developed, you must track your actions.  That means that you must assign categories to your spending and account for every penny.  This is the only way to truly see what your budget is doing.  There are many forms, templates, or software that are great for enabling your tracking success.  But if you don’t use them, they are worthless.  This tracking phase is critical.  If you do not know where your money is going, you will not be able to do the following steps that are necessary for really controlling your financial life.

By tracking your actions, you are able to analyze those actions to determine if they are following the plan for you to achieve your goals.  During this analysis, you may find spending that you do not really consider necessary or important.  You may also find that there are things that you would rather not spend your money on and use that money instead to attain your goal.  It is this analysis that leads you to the next step in a truly successful budget.

The final step in a successful budget is adjustment of your spending.  It is here, after careful analysis, that you reassign spending to follow your plan and meet your goal.  It is here that you can begin to see how readjustment is what you must do.  After all, your previous actions have led you to the realization that you must make a change.  Now make that change.  Don’t lose sight of the fact that all of these steps are necessary. They will become a cycle that you will continue to use as you control your financial life

Budget forms and softwareare a tool for you to use to develop a careful financial plan.  But do not forget the cardinal rule.  You can never spend more money than you make!

Why Budget II

Rising Fuel Cost has wiped out my budget!

Not really, but:

Some people just can’t answer the question of why budget.

Today’s world just gives us another reason for why budget.  The cost of fuel here in the United States is skyrocketing, food costs are on the rise and every time we turn around, it seems like everything just costs more.  It appears that everything is going up, except my income.  I’m sure that if you’re like me, your income is pretty well stable.  You might get an annual cost of living raise, but that seems to just put us way behind the curve of rising prices.  Everything we buy seems to be going up on a weekly basis while income goes up on an annual basis, at best.  What can one do?

If you have taken the time to really understand why you budget, done the work to establish the budget, and are trying to live by that budget, you understand what must be done.  Those of us who live on a budget realize that a budget is a means to an end not an end in itself.  We understand that circumstances change.  We understand that our budget must be able to adapt to new situations that we are faced with or new goals that we establish.  A budget is a fluid living thing and is not cast in stone without the possibility of change.

Hopefully our budget was constructed with enough foresight and in a manner that we will have the means to counteract these rising prices.  Hopefully, we made allowances for a bit of a fluctuation in our expenses.  If we made enough allowance, we can weather these rising prices until our income catches up.  Hopefully that is the situation that you are faced with.

On the other hand, if you did not build in enough allowance and your expenses are still exceeding your allowances, you only have three options.  They may not be what you want to hear or do, but remember, a budget must make allowances for changing circumstances. Things are certainly changing now so we must change also.

Your first option is to make more money thereby increasing your income.  If you have the ability or capability to make more money to cover your expenses, that would be the ideal way to cover current shortfalls.  Simply increase your income and assign that income to areas of expense that have increased.  All of us could probably do more to maintain the lifestyle that we have achieved, after all that is what we work for.

If you can’t increase your income, then you can consider cutting your expenses.  To do a good job of cutting expenses, you must know where your money is going.  Your budget should be able to let you see in what areas you might choose to reduce expenses.  This could be a tough decision.  It may mean that your lifestyle is going to change.  Nobody likes to see their lifestyle less than what it was previously. Bite the bullet and make the tough decisions.

Your only other option is to go into debt.  I hope this is not the alternative that you accept.  If this is what you decide to do, it must be, for your long term peace of mind, just a short-term solution.  You must come to the acceptance that you are either going to have to increase your income or decrease your spending.  Remember that a budget can not be static.  It must be fluid and changeable to meet your every day life. Debt should be very closely controlled and limited to very high cost items.

A budget is for living and will change with your life.    If you don’t have a budget, you really need to start preparing one now if you want to control your financial life.   This article is just another answer to the question of why budget.

Budget Software

Budget software is a tool for you to use to gain and maintain control of your financial life.  Budget software is not a necessary tool.  It is just something to help you do the job in a more efficient manner.  The easier it is for you to budget, the more likely you are to do it.  The better you do the job of budgeting, the more likely you are to reap the rewards of a good budget.  This means that budget software can be an invaluable tool to successful budgeting.

What should budget software do?  It must assist you in doing the things necessary for a good budget.  If it doesn’t help you with your budget, it is not worth while.

Good budget software must allow you to establish financial goals.  If you cannot define your destination, it is going to be very difficult to plan your trip.  What I mean is, you have to decide where your money is going to be spent and how much if you want to have a financially satisfying life.  Your goals in life should be of prime importance as you develop, maintain, and live your budget.

Good budget software allows you to record and maintain your current expenses by assigning categories to your spending.  This allows you to track and analyze your spending and make any adjustments necessary to continue toward your goals.  The setup process should be simple, the posting process should be easy, and you should have the ability to customize to some extent to meet your unique requirements.

Finally, good budget software should make it easier for you to live with a budget.  You see, no matter how good the software is, or how good the budget is, if you don’t use them they are worthless.  Only a good tool used properly to assist you in budgeting will allow you to succeed with your financial plan.

Budget software runs the gamut of simplicity and effectiveness for budgeting.  Some budget software consists of basic templates found in word processor programs that are probably already in your computer.  Some software is simply an accounting program that must be installed on your computer and is adapted for use in budgeting.  Other software is designed specifically for personal and home budgeting requirements for use in an online environment.

The best tools quite often lead to the most efficient completion of a quality job.  The best budget software tool I think you should look at is based on a method I first used for budgeting.  That is the envelopes method.  The nice thing about this method is that I got to assign the money. That gave me a great amount of control about reaching our goals.  My wife got to spend the money, from the envelopes, but she could only take it out of the proper envelope.  She was more than happy to spend the money.  This method was of great benefit to us for a long time.

That envelope method has evolved and is now available online as Mvelopes Personal.  This is a great tool, budget software, that I think you should consider.  At the least, try the 30 day free trial.  I think you will be pleased if you are really interested in gaining control of your financial life.

Free Budget

Free Budget!  There is no such thing as a free budget that is going to meet your needs! I can give you free budget spreadsheets, templates, worksheets, and software, but realize that a budget is a careful plan.  It is unique in that it is your plan.  No one can develop that careful financial plan for you.  They can provide guidelines and tools to assist you, but it must be your effort.

There are three steps essential to making a good budget.  You must define your goals.  You must assess your current situation then determine your direction.  Finally, you must live with that budget.  That means, you must monitor, assess, and adjust your budget to meet your financial needs and wants.

There are free tools to help you organize and prioritize your goals.  They may assist you in defining your goals, but your goals are unique.  You have to decide how you are going to live your financial life.  You must decide if you want to be debt free.  You decide when you want to retire.  Do you want to retire at 45, 55, 65, 75, or never?  Only you know.  Do you intend to rent or buy a home?  Do you want to have a new car every year, every three years or never?  Do you intend to have children, and how will you provide for their education?  These are some of the goals that you might be considering.  No one can give them to you for free.  Only you can define these goals.  Only you can prioritize these goals. Someone may give you tools to help you organize and prioritize, but this is a process that you must do on your own or as a couple.

There are free tools to help you assess your current situation.  As a matter of fact, you probably already have some of them on your computer.  Microsoft Word, Works, and Excel all have spreadsheets with budget templates to help you develop a budget that will suit your needs.  Also, there are many online sites that offer worksheets, templates, and even software.  You must realize that many of these online sites have a catch.  You may be required to register, subscribe, or even sign up for a free trial.  The reality is that these are only tools to aid you in developing a budget.  You must take the time, and make the effort to find out where you stand with your spending.  You must then, while considering your goals, assign your spending to required categories, as well as desired categories.  The only thing free is the tools.  The tools may make the job easier but you must do the work.

The final requirement for a good budget is that you must live it.  You have to monitor your budget.  You have to watch where your money goes.  You have to decide if how much and where you are spending is meeting your goals.  You may find it necessary to make adjustments.  You may decide to reprioritize your spending as your goals change. You must realize that a budget is not static.  It is not something that you set up, and then forget.  It must be something that is fluid and changeable to meet your needs and wishes as your life changes.

There is no such thing as a free budget.  There are a lot of good free tools to help you develop a budget.  Use them wisely.  The result should be a good budget, and is well worth the effort.

Why Budget

“Why budget” should be a rhetorical question.  No answer should be expected for this question as the answer should be apparent.  Each of us should already know the importance of a budget to our financial livelihood.

Asking why budget is almost like asking why eat.  A budget is just as important to our financial life as food is to our physical life.  Just as there are different types of food to nourish and maintain our physical body, there are different types of budgets to control our financial life.  A well developed and maintained budget will pay as many benefits to our financial life as a sensible and healthy diet will help our physical well being.

You can subsist physically on junk food, but you will certainly be much more prone to illness and disease with various health problems.  You could probably live for quite sometime just eating junk food.  That life though could be fraught with problems and keep you from enjoying a healthy and happy life.  I don’t think that there is any argument to the fact that if you maintain a healthy diet, you could lead a more fulfilling life.

By the same token, you could have a junk food type budget.  This type budget is generally very happenstance.  There is generally very little thought given to what a healthy financial life requires.  The budget is not really a careful plan.  It was not carefully researched and developed, and certainly is not followed. This type budget will almost certainly result in financial problems, just as a junk food diet for your body will result in health problems. .

Most of us know that a good diet is important to a good physical life.  We know the basic principles, but do not take the time or make the effort to live a healthy life.  It is just much easier to eat what we want, when we are hungry, than to take the time to do some research, develop the proper menu, and commit to living on that diet.  So we just go a long.  We eat junk food when we know we should be eating fruits and vegetables.  It just seems so much easier.

We do the same thing with our financial menu as we do with our physical menu.  We know the importance of both a good diet and a good budget.  We know that a good budget is a major factor in controlling our financial lives.  Yet, we do not take the time to analyze our income and spending.  We do not take the time to develop a budget to suit our unique lives.  We do not make the commitment to follow the menu (budget) that will let us maximize our financial lives.

Why budget?  I am not a health nut, nor have I made the commitment to a good healthy physical diet.  I am like most people in this.  But, I do want to control my financial life.  I have done the necessary research about my financial life.  I have developed a unique budget for my household.  I have committed to following, that menu (budget).  It is not always easy.  Sometimes I eat a fast food hamburger by going outside my budget.  I always try to get back on budget.

Why budget?   I don’t really think you expect an answer as you already know the answer.  We all know how important a budget is to our financial life.  Each of us must decide what our financial menu will include.  I know that it is difficult, but I hope that you decide to develop your own budget menu to control your financial life.  I know that it will give you a much richer life.

How to Budget

Everyone budgets.  Some are more successful than others.  Some use a very structured, strict budget.  Others do their budgeting in a very informal manner.  Apparently, you’re looking for information about how to budget your money successfully.  If you weren’t, you wouldn’t be reading this article.  This tells me that you are concerned about your spending patterns as it relates to your income.  Maybe it seems you don’t have enough money to go around or you want more money for a particular thing.  Whatever the reason, a good budget should help you.

Before we can begin to talk about how to budget, we need to see what a budget is.  Webster’s New World dictionary defines a budget as:

1. Noun - as a careful plan for spending the money that is received in a certain period

2. Verb - to plan the spending of money.

As you can see by this definition, we must take action, i.e. plan the spending of our money.  How well we do this planning will determine how successful we are in learning how to budget.

Many people allow their bills and payments to determine how they budget.  They pay their rent or mortgage and utilities, buy food, and allow for transportation costs.  They allow everything else to be happenstance, such as an eye-catching display on an aisle endcap, or whimsical, such as a really pretty pair of shoes in a window display.  Most often, this method of budgeting is not successful.

If you really want to learn how to budget , you can try software, budget work sheets, or templates.  Any or all of these might help you with your budget.  But, remember that these are just general categories.  A carefully planned budget requires a unique budget.  That means that you must develop your budget to meet your unique requirements.

The best way to do that will require some effort on your part.  Maintain a log or journal of everything that you spend for at least two months.  The category that you assign expenditures to should be apparent. Don’t worry about having too many categories.  You might be able to combine some of them later.  The more accurately that you maintain this log, the more accurate your budget will be.  A more accurate budget will allow you to have a more successful budget.

Do not forget to allow for those items that are not paid monthly.  You must include items such as real estate tax or insurance payments that are only paid quarterly or annually.  Determine what would be required monthly to be able to make those payments when they are due.  Establish a separate account, such as savings or checking, to hold that money separately for timely payments.

If you maintain this log accurately, you will be able to see where your money is being spent.  Once you know where your money is going, you are ready to really make a budget.  Even though the general categories of your expenses will be shared by most budgets, your decision as to how much is spent where makes your budget unique.

You must decide what is right for you.  You decide if too much is being spent on rent or mortgage.  You decide if you want more in savings for retirement.  You might decide that you should eat out less often.  What ever these decisions are, they are yours.  They make up your budget.

It is not enough to learn how to budget .  Once that process is completed, you must learn to control your spending to fit the budget.  The best budget in the world is no good unless you live by that budget.  I think that you will find that a firm commitment to spending within your well-developed budget is rewarding.  It will certainly give you more control over your spending.

Frugal Living

We are dedicated to helping you have a better happier life through frugal living.

The first thing we should do is define frugal.  In Webster’s New World Dictionary frugal is defined as not wasteful; thrifty; economical.  It does not mean cheapskate or tightwad.  Frugal living is simply using your resources, i.e. money and time, to give you the greatest benefit.  “Waste not, want not” will allow you to control your resources and expand the possibilities in your life.  This control, and expansion of possibilities, should lead to a simpler and happier life.

We provide you with information and advice about budgets, household finances, personal finances, credit, good credit, bad credit, credit scores, credit repair, credit cards, credit card rewards, etc. Almost anything and everything concerning your finances will be found here.  If you have specific questions, feel free to email me.  I will either post an article with my answer or answer you personally via return email.
